Professional golfers down swing move & casting – what’s the difference? -
Here is part 2 of the “Trail Elbow Movement” series. Moving your trail arm and especially your elbow correctly on your golf down swing will allow you to generate maximum club head speed as you strike the golf ball, as well as making it easier for you to control the shape and therefore direction of your golf shot. Here’s a really simple video and exercise to work on to get you making the correct move with your trail elbow on your down swing
What your trail elbow should do on GOLF DOWN SWING -
Hitting blocks (straight right) or hooks (too much right to left curve) when out on the golf course can be very destructive to your score. Both of these golf shots happen when the club head travels through impact too much from the inside, so to correct this issue work on this drill which will encourage a little more body rotation on your down swing.

Early extension simply means you are moving your hips towards the golf ball during your down swing and this results in you being unable to hold your spine angle as you strike through the golf ball. Making this standing up action as you hit with result in you struggling to strike well and also make it difficult to control the accuracy of your golf shots, as you will lack the necessary body rotation to square the club face through impact. Here’s a drill to try to help you learn the feeling of holding your spine angle and rotating correctly around it.

Getting the correct movement of your trail arm during your back swing will see you achieve a great position at the top, allowing you to control the club face, keep your swing on plane and to keep your body and arms connected to help you produce power. Here’s a really simple drill to help you learn the feeling and position you need to achieve with your right arm (right handed golfers) as you get to the top of your back swing.

The key is to rotate well and deliver speed through your body in a specific sequence – but what does this actually mean and how do you do it? Ensuring you have the correct set up, or address position, for the different golf clubs you need to use out on the golf course, will give you the best opportunity to hit effective golf shots with each one.
